Why is it that we see polarization from the interstellar medium?

The Southern Coalsack – My favorite interstellar cloud.

The Southern Coalsack is a dark molecular cloud which shines in X-rays.  Alsomt certainly because it was recently (1  Myrs ago – i.e. “astronomically recently”) overtaken by the expanding front of the Upper Centaurus-Lupus Superbubble.
